The Penang Health Department inspected a popular food outlet following a customer’s complaint about a cockroach leg found in a dish, issuing improvement orders

GEORGE TOWN: The Penang Health Department (JKNPP) has inspected a well-known food outlet in Lorong Pitt here. The inspection followed a customer complaint alleging a cockroach leg was found in a dish.

State Youth, Sports and Health Committee chairman Daniel Gooi Zi Sen said the premises was found to be in satisfactory condition. He noted several aspects still required improvement.

Corrective and improvement orders have been issued to the outlet. The orders are to ensure full compliance with the Food Act 1983 and the Food Hygiene Regulations 2009.

The Food Safety and Quality Unit of the North-East District Health Office carried out the inspection. This took place on March 16.

The operator was also provided with health education. This covered premises hygiene, safe food handling and compliance with legal requirements.

Gooi said JKNPP remains committed to ensuring a high level of food safety in Penang. Monitoring and enforcement actions will be carried out continuously to safeguard public health.

Earlier, Batu Uban assemblyman A. Kumaresan expressed disappointment on Facebook. He highlighted a lack of enforcement action, such as compounds or closure notices, following the complaint.

The complaint was made by his staff two weeks ago. It concerned the alleged discovery of the foreign object.
