Penang Opposition leader hospitalised after blood pressure spike during assembly sitting

PENANG Opposition leader Muhammad Fauzi Yusoff was rushed by ambulance to the Penang Hospital today after an apparent spike in his blood pressure.

Fauzi, the state PAS commissioner and Sungai Dua assemblyman, was his usual jovial self when he felt unwell and sought treatment with medical staff at the legislative building along Farquhar Street.

“As he was resting during the break, he felt discomfort, so he went to the medical officer on duty to check,” PAS Pinang Tunggal assemblyman Bukhori Ghazali informed journalists.

The long-serving PAS leader was apparently warded due to high blood pressure, and is currently under observation at the Penang Hospital's intensive care unit.

Muhammad Fauzi did not pass out, nor did he have any severe symptoms, but, according to medical guidelines, he must remain in the hospital as a precaution, said Bukhori.

“I spoke to him, and he said he plans to come back if he’s given the all clear by the doctor later,” he added.

He said that Muhammed Fauzi has an existing hypertension condition and would need medical checks if there is a spike in blood pressure.

“He told me he did not want to be admitted as he wanted to come back to listen to the winding-up speech by the chief minister,” he added.

Earlier, PAS spiritual adviser Datuk Hashim Jasin was also warded at the same hospital for ailments related to his old age and heart condition.

Hashim, aged 86, received a flood of visitors, including Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail. - May 14, 2026.
