KANGAR – Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) has suspended the membership of Perlis Menteri Besar Abu Bakar Hamzah for two party election terms, effective Oct 13.
A letter dated Oct 14, 2026, and signed by Bersatu Disciplinary Board chairman Datuk Mohd Radzi Manan conveyed the decision to suspend Abu Bakar, who is also the Kangar Bersatu division chief.
Bersatu Perlis chairman Izizam Ibrahim confirmed the matter after the suspension letter went viral on social media.
"Yes, that is correct. The letter was issued last week. The Menteri Besar is also aware of the suspension letter.
"For now, we are waiting for an official decision from the Bersatu central leadership and Pas assemblymen," he said on Wednesday.
According to the circulated letter, the party’s Disciplinary Board, which convened on Oct 13, decided to suspend Abu Bakar under Clause 22.5 of the Bersatu Constitution for two party election terms.
The action was taken following alleged violations of Clause 9.1.4 of the Bersatu Constitution, as well as the party’s Code of Ethics and Conduct.
Abu Bakar was also stripped of all positions he held within the party and barred from making any statements on behalf of Bersatu throughout the suspension period.
However, he could appeal the decision to the party’s Appeal Board within 14 days of the notice being issued.
