HOUSEHOLDS could save an estimated RM273.72 million in electricity costs over five years under an expanded government rebate scheme for energy-efficient appliances, following an additional RM15 million allocation that brings total funding to RM47 million.
The Energy Transition and Water Transformation Ministry (PETRA) said the extra funding for the NUR\@PETRA 2026 domestic programme would increase the total allocation to the equivalent of 235,000 rebate units, helping more households switch to energy-efficient air-conditioners and refrigerators.
The programme, administered by the Sustainable Energy Development Authority Malaysia (SEDA Malaysia), began in July as part of efforts to ease household cost pressures and reduce electricity consumption amid rising global energy costs.
PETRA said the expanded programme was expected to generate electricity savings of 602.91 gigawatt-hours over five years, alongside annual carbon emissions reductions of 446,145 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO₂eq).
The additional allocation comes as Malaysia faces uncertainty in global energy markets linked to geopolitical conflict in West Asia and the prospect of more extreme weather associated with El Niño.
The Malaysian Meteorological Department (METMalaysia) has forecast that a Super El Niño phenomenon could begin in November 2026, with the main effects of extreme weather expected to be felt in Malaysia between January and March 2027, the ministry said. - October 10, 2026
