It’s moving day at the 2025 PGA Championship as the main contenders battle to put themselves in prime position for a tilt at the Wanamaker Trophy come Sunday. Play finally began at 5pm BST after a long delay due to dangerous weather at Quail Hollow.

Rory McIlroy only just made the cut on Friday and needs one of the rounds of his life to give himself any shot at victory. Bryson DeChambeau, Max Homa, Scottie Scheffler and Matt Fitzpatrick are all well placed at the start of the weekend as they chase surprise 36-hole leader Jhonattan Vegas.

Vegas is a four-time winner on the PGA Tour but the world No 70 has a dismal history in the majors. “This is kind of what we put all those hours for. You put all those hours to give yourself chances like this,” he said after Friday’s one-under-par 70 left him with a two-shot lead at the midway point.

What a few minutes at Quail Hollow!

First DeChambeau finds the water on 17, feeling the bite of the Green Mile. He is nowhere near with his bogey putt and makes a painful double.

A few holes back, Scheffler hits a sublime tee shot on the par-four 14th to three feet! Incredible shot. The leaderboard is about to change dramatically.

DeChambeau gives up solo lead

22:39

,

Lawrence Ostlere

Scheffler’s ball plunges into the sand on the par-three 13th, and he has work to do to find par there. Jonny Vegas is in a spot of bother on the 12th too, after overshooting the green.

And ahead at 16, DeChambeau’s par putt lips out from six feet. That’s his first bogey of the day and he drops back to join those on seven under.

Alex Noren is having a great day and he birdies the 17th to add his name to the pack of players on seven under.

Lawrence Ostlere

A few moves all at once – Rahm bogeys the brutal 17th to drop back to six under, where he meets Matt Fitzpatrick and Alex Noren after birdies on 10 and 15 respectively. Meanwhile, American Davis Riley has come from nowhere, with five birdies through eight holes, to climb to seven under and a share of the lead!

It is so, so tight at the top. What a finale we have in store tonight and on Sunday.

Leaderboard:

-7 Riley (15), DeChambeau (14), Scheffler (10), Vegas (10)

Rahm is dialled in right now, and he arrows his approach to the 16th green right at the pin. A tap-in makes it three birdies in a row, and he joins the leaders on seven under.

Back on 10, both Kim and Scheffler miss the green long with their second shots on the par five.

McIlroy forced to change driver head, says report

19:17

,

Lawrence Ostlere

A reminder of this story that emerged yesterday on Rory McIlroy’s driver. Does it help explain some of his issues this week?

McIlroy is using a backup driver at the PGA Championship after seeing his preferred driver labelled “non-conforming” by the USGA.

After testing at Quail Hollow through the PGA of America, a statement from the USGA read: “That program is consistent with the same level of support that we provide to the PGA Tour as part of their regular program for driver testing.”

A non-conforming driver is not rare in the sport, with Golf Channel commentator Johnson Wagner told SiriusXM radio stating: “The USGA conducts these tests pretty much every week out here on professional golf, and they test it across all aspects of the face of the driver. Drivers fail all the time. Every single week, somebody’s driver fails.

“It is by no fault of the player. They don’t know how to do it, it is a sophisticated testing system. And when you’re a player like Rory McIlroy that hits the ball as hard as he does, the face naturally thins out… But when you’re hitting it like Rory McIlroy with his speed, it thins out a little quicker.”

Tyrrell Hatton and Shane Lowry face fines for ill-tempered outbursts at PGA Championship

16:15

,

Jack Rathborn

A furious Shane Lowry made his feelings about Quail Hollow known in emphatic fashion on day two of the 107th US PGA Championship, with the Irishman and Tyrrell Hatton both likely to face fines for foul-mouthed outbursts.

Lowry’s tee shot on the eighth hole pitched in the fairway and bounced sideways into a pitch mark left by another player.

That meant the former Open champion was not allowed relief for an embedded ball and, after confirming the situation with a rules official, Lowry could only hit his second shot into a greenside bunker.

Lowry responded by slamming his club into the turf and exclaiming loudly, “f*** this place” before going on to make a bogey five and flipping his middle finger at the hole as he tapped in.

The dropped shot contributed to a second round of 71 and meant Lowry missed the cut by a single shot on two over par.
