According to PGA Tour rules, Rory McIlroy could be facing a one-year suspension from the tour next year.

We have seen very little of McIlroy on the PGA Tour this season, and that could land him in some hot water. As he shifts his focus to the major championships, the back-to-back Masters winner has played just nine times on the tour in 2026.

PGA Tour rules state a player must play 15 events in a season, or face a one-year suspension from the tour. There is precedent for this, as Seve Ballesteros was suspended in 1986, and Martin Kaymer in 2016.

But these same rules might not apply to McIlroy, according to the tour itself.

PGA Tour provides an out for Rory McIlroy suspension

According to the PGA Tour, the rules that once applied to Ballesteros and Kaymer may not apply to McIlroy. They said they have the right not to suspend McIlroy in extenuating circumstances.

The tour presented The Daily Drive with the following from the player handbook after they reported McIlroy’s potential suspension:

“Notwithstanding the above, the Commissioner, upon application by a foreign member and for medical reasons or other extraordinary circumstances that the Commissioner, at his discretion, determines to be a valid reason for not playing in at least 15 PGA Tour cosponsored or approved tournaments, may reduce the 15-minimum (or 12-minimum as the case may be) tournament requirement.”

That sounds convenient. At any point, the PGA Tour commissioner can effectively say these rules do not apply to McIlroy, and that is likely going to happen unless the Northern Irishman plays another six PGA Tour events this year.

That’s bound to cause a stir, and it sets a dangerous precedent for players who may think the rules don’t apply to them either.

The reason Rory McIlroy could be given exemption from suspension

There’s only one public reason that McIlroy could be given his exemption. He withdrew from the Arnold Palmer Invitational with a back injury, and after playing The Players a week later, he wasn’t seen until The Masters.

So if McIlroy were to get to 13 or 14 events, this rule could reasonably be used to give him an exemption. But if he only plays 11 or 12, then the argument becomes tougher to make.

McIlroy is clearly spending less time playing on the PGA Tour to prepare for the major championships. He’s all but said it himself. He has been fit and able to play in PGA Tour events.

He’s scheduled to play in the Genesis Scottish Open, a DP World Tour and PGA Tour co-sanctioned event, and he’ll more than likely play in all three playoff events. That would bring him to 13 in total.

But with no more Signature Events on the schedule, it’ll be interesting to see if McIlroy plays a smaller tournament in order to meet the threshold, or if he’ll bank on this exemption.
