MELAKA: Pakatan Harapan (PH) candidate for the Paya Rumput state seat, Datuk Azman Abidin, has proposed using artificial intelligence (AI) to coordinate traffic lights according to traffic density in the area.

He said the system could determine the number of vehicles and traffic flow at junctions, unlike existing systems that rely on sensors to detect passing vehicles.

“This is not a new concept, as several developed countries are already using this technology to manage traffic. A similar approach should be considered for Paya Rumput.

“It is also more affordable, as constructing flyovers or widening roads would involve high costs and take time,” he told Bernama.

Azman said traffic congestion was among the issues he had highlighted, noting that he had to pass through 13 traffic lights when travelling from Alor Gajah to Paya Rumput.

He said the issue was also frequently raised by local residents, particularly as rapid housing development had increased pressure on the existing road network.

“There are already too many housing developments here, putting a strain on the area. However, the roads, including the main roads, remain the same.

“I believe urban planning also needs to be reviewed to ensure the road network can accommodate increasing traffic in line with development,” he said.

Azman, who is contesting in the Melaka state election for the first time, faces a three-cornered contest in Paya Rumput against Perikatan Nasional’s (PN) Rafie Ahmad and Parti Bersama Malaysia (Bersama) candidate Abdul Rashid Abu Bakar.

Polling is set for Nov 14, while early voting will take place on Nov 10.
