THE Philippines and Vietnam marked the 50th anniversary of their diplomatic relations, showcasing traditional art and festivities in Intramuros on Friday.
The event, titled "Rhythms of the Land, Puppets of the Water" — which was organized by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) and the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Vietnam — showcased the two countries' traditional art forms, including Vietnam's centuries-old water puppetry and performances by the Philippines' Bayanihan National Folk Dance Company.
The Vietnamese water puppetry, or múa rối nước, is an 11th-century folk art. Artists from the Philippines' Teatrong Mulat and the Viet Nam National Puppetry Theatre hosted an interactive workshop at Centro de Turismo Intramuros, offering the public a rare, behind-the-scenes look at traditional puppetry techniques and craftsmanship.
NCCA Chairman Eric Zerrudo, in his speech, emphasized the importance of preserving traditional heritage amid Southeast Asia's rapid technological and creative growth.
"Our traditional arts serve as the foundation, our roots that inspire and sustain us. Along with Vietnam — our brother in Asean — we cherish these shared cultural treasures," Zerrudo said.
"In the face of global uncertainties, our partnership remains a vital pillar in fostering regional harmony and growth," Zerrudo said.
Hoang Dao Cuong, deputy minister of the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism of Vietnam, highlighted the role of arts and human exchanges in strengthening bilateral ties following high-level diplomatic visits earlier in the year.
"Culture brings people together, builds trust, and helps us understand each other better," Hoang said, noting that the Manila festivities reflect Vietnam’s broader international cultural strategy running through 2030.
The NCCA said, similar to the strings of a puppet that guide its every movement, “the Philippines and Vietnam are bound by shared histories, cultural exchanges, and a friendship strengthened over five decades.”
