MANILA, Philippines — The Philippines' scores in the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) has gone up, Education Secretary Sonny Angara said.
"In all domains, science, reading, and math, we improved," Angara said as he showed the results on Tuesday at the Caloocan City Science High School.
The country’s average score in science increased by 17 points to 373 from 356 in 2022.
Angara said that in reading, the score improved by 16 points to 371 from 355. He said the highest rise was in math, which went up by 20 points from 367 from 347.
"In science, we outranked 14 countries. In mathematics, we outranked 16 countries. And in reading, we outranked 18 countries," he said.
Angara cited the statement of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) that the Philippines is the fastest growing country in terms of reading.
"So in math, according to the OECD, we are among the most improved," Angara said.
The presentation showed that the Philippines was among those with a positive trend in science.
"This tells us that that Marcos administration is doing something right in...education policies, of course supported by our partners in Congress. Chairman Roman [Romulo] is there and, in the Senate, Senator Bam [Aquino], Senate President Win [Gatchalian], and the Edcom," Angara said, referring to the Commission on Education.
In 2018, the Philippines scored the lowest in reading among 79 countries and the second lowest in math and science.
