MANILA, Philippines — Taal Volcano recorded five volcanic earthquakes, including one lasting 38 minutes, in the 24 hours covered by the latest monitoring bulletin from the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) on Friday.
The Oct. 9, 2026 report also recorded one minor phreatomagmatic eruption lasting five minutes.
The volcano produced a plume reaching 4,000 meters, with strong steaming that drifted southwest, Phivolcs reported.
“Short-term inflation of Taal Volcano Island” was also observed, Phivolcs said in Filipino.
Sulfur dioxide emissions reached 3,071 metric tons per day based on measurements taken on Oct. 8.
Phivolcs continued to prohibit entry to Taal Volcano Island, particularly the Main Crater and Daang Kastila fissures, as well as boating on Taal Lake. Aircraft are also prohibited from flying near the volcano's summit.
The agency warned of possible sudden phreatic explosions, volcanic earthquakes, light ashfall and the accumulation or release of toxic gases.
