PHOENIX has named Charles Tiu as its new head coach as the team prepares to have a fresh start in the PBA Commissioner Cup, the second conference of Season 50.
Tiu, the brother of former Rain or Shine guard Chris, will be taking the vacant head coaching spot after Phoenix parted ways with Willy Wilson.
Wilson lasted just one conference as he failed to lead Phoenix to the Philippine Cup playoffs, limping to a 3-8 record as a rookie coach.
Tiu’s appointment was made official on Tuesday as the team made its announcement via its social media account.
“Charles Tiu takes the reins for the Phoenix SUPER LPG Fuelmasters! After officially accepting the offer last Monday, Coach Charles begins the road to Season 50 Commissioner’s Cup tomorrow,” the team posted on its social media account on Tuesday.
Tiu has been a regular fixture in Philippine basketball, starting with the original Smart-Gilas squad that Serbian coach Rajko Toroman handled from 2009-2011. Tim served as one of Toroman’s assistant’s during that period.
The concurrent College of St. Benilde head coach also had assistant coaching stints at Powerade in 2011, followed by Barako Bull a few years later in the PBA.
He later served as one of Norman Black’s deputies at Meralco, and recently, as one of the assistant coaches at Converge.
Tiu has gained accolades as head coach, piloting Mighty Sports to the cage titles in the 2019 William Jones Cup and the 2020 Dubai International Basketball Championship.
The Filipino basketball coach also steered the Strong Group Athletics to back-to-back William Jones Cup championships in 2024 and 2025.
