Piccadilly line closures: What to know as tube shuts for three days this week

  • Transport for London is introducing a series of staggered closures on the Piccadilly line until 1 November, which will significantly disrupt travel to Heathrow Airport throughout the summer.
  • The closures are necessary to carry out upgrade works ahead of introducing a new £3.4bn fleet of air-conditioned trains late this year, designed to boost capacity by 10 per cent and improve boarding with wider doorways.
  • The Piccadilly line is closed this week from 25 - 27 August (Cockfosters to Uxbridge), with further closures expected on 18 September (Night Tube - Hyde Park Corner to Northfields), 19 - 20 September (Hyde Park Corner to Acton Town) and 26 - 27 September (Cockfosters to Uxbridge).
  • Travel disruption on the line will extend well into the autumn, with further partial closures scheduled on 17 - 18 October (Hammersmith to Heathrow and Uxbridge) and 30 Oct (Night Tube) - 1 Nov (No service on the entire line).
  • Passengers seeking budget travel to Heathrow will be affected, as the £5.80 Piccadilly line option is temporarily restricted, forcing travellers towards more expensive alternatives such as the Elizabeth line from £13.90 or the Heathrow Express for around £26.
