KUALA LUMPUR – PKR has formally accepted the resignation of Pandan MP Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli and Setiawangsa MP Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, confirmed the party’s secretary-general, Senator Datuk Dr Fuziah Salleh.
“Keadilan accepts this decision, and in accordance with Clause 9(1)(c) of the Keadilan Constitution, their membership is automatically terminated upon their declaration of leaving the party,” she said in a statement today after receiving the recorded announcements made by both former PKR leaders during a political briefing in Petaling Jaya on Sunday.
She added that their declaration aligns with Article 49A(1)(a)(ii) of the Federal Constitution, which states that a Member of Parliament’s seat must be vacated if they cease to be a member of the political party under which they were elected.
“As Secretary-General, I will refer both cases involving these MPs to the Speaker of the Dewan Rakyat regarding their status as Members of Parliament under the Federal Constitution,” Dr Fuziah said.
PKR will also determine the membership status of other MPs who attended the political briefing.
Earlier, Rafizi and Nik Nazmi announced their departure from PKR and their resignation as MPs, effective Tuesday, May 19.
“I will issue a formal letter to the Dewan Rakyat Speaker tomorrow to inform him of my decision to resign and vacate the Pandan parliamentary seat,” Rafizi said, while Nik Nazmi said he would submit a formal letter to the party's secretary-general.
Their resignations have sparked speculation over potential by-elections in Pandan and Setiawangsa.
Rafizi noted that the decision to call for a by-election rests with the Speaker, particularly if the vacancies affect the government’s majority. - May 17, 2026
