KUALA LUMPUR – The Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) Central Leadership Council (MPP) unanimously decided not to accept Nurul Izzah Anwar’s resignation as the party’s deputy president.
PKR information chief Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil said Nurul Izzah would remain a PKR member and continue supporting the party’s struggle.
However, he said PKR had agreed to give Nurul Izzah time and space to attend to personal matters and pursue her Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) studies.
“At the recent meeting, the MPP decided not to accept Nurul Izzah’s resignation because she had asked for time, as stated in her statement, among other things, to take care of herself and also to complete and continue her PhD education.
“So we are giving her time. The duties, responsibilities and functions of the deputy president will be carried out by vice-president Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail,” he said on Saturday.
Nurul Izzah, who is also the former Permatang Pauh Member of Parliament, had on Thursday requested to step down as PKR deputy president after lengthy consideration, saying it would allow her to embark on a new chapter by pursuing further studies centred on service and contribution without necessarily being bound to the political world.
However, she stressed that the decision did not change her commitment to remain a PKR member and support the party’s struggle towards a better Malaysia under the leadership of party president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, together with the leadership line-up and grassroots.
Elaborating, Fahmi said Saifuddin had been entrusted with carrying out the duties to ensure the party’s administration and operations continued smoothly without disruption.
He added that the PKR MPP had only agreed to grant Nurul Izzah temporary leave beginning after the 2026 National Congress until a date to be announced.
