In a surprising move, PKR MP Hassan Karim's call for the resignation of Umno President Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has ignited a debate on the stability of the unity government led by Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

Umno Kedah's Information Chief, Datuk Shaiful Hazizy Zainol Abidin, dismissed the statement as an attention-seeking move, attributing it to Hassan Karim's perceived lack of significance in the political arena.

Shaiful Hazizy asserted that the unity government remains robust, highlighting the willingness of opposition MPs to join the government as a testament to the strength of the Zahid-Anwar coalition. He questioned Hassan Karim's credibility and speculated that the statement aimed at garnering public attention rather than addressing real political concerns.

On the other hand, Umno Supreme Council member Datuk Mohd Puad Zarkashi criticized Hassan Karim for suggesting Zahid's replacement without evaluating the performance of PKR ministers.

Puad called for an assessment of Economy Minister Rafizi Ramli and Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek, emphasizing the importance of self-awareness among PKR leaders.

Puad argued that Umno did not interfere in PKR's internal matters during Rafizi Ramli's election as PKR deputy president, urging Hassan Karim not to be hypocritical about involvement in Umno's affairs. He defended Zahid's leadership, emphasizing that the party grassroots determine the president's appointment.

The debate takes a broader turn as Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg criticized education policies without specifying if it referred to Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek.

Abang Johari emphasised the need for a focus on English proficiency, adding another layer to the discussion on government performance.

Hassan Karim's call for leadership change within Umno has not only sparked internal party discussions but also prompted scrutiny of PKR ministers' effectiveness.

The ensuing debate raises questions about the overall performance of the unity government and the challenges it may face in maintaining stability leading up to the upcoming General Election.
