PKR questions Lee’s attendance at party, Petaling Jaya meetings

PARTI Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) has questioned Petaling Jaya MP Lee Chean Chung’s decision to resign from the party’s central leadership council, saying he had been given opportunities to raise his concerns but was absent from many of the meetings where key issues were discussed.

PKR deputy secretary-general Bryan Ng Yih Miin said Lee had not attended most Majlis Pimpinan Pusat (MPP) meetings since November last year before eventually stepping down from the party leadership body.

According to Ng, the meetings — attended by party president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, as well as PKR ministers and deputy ministers — were among the main forums for discussing government policy, national issues and matters affecting the party.

Ng was responding to Lee’s statement yesterday on his decision to resign and his claim that he no longer had sufficient room to express his views.

“If he was really prevented from speaking, when did it happen, at which meeting, who stopped him and what issue was he trying to raise?” Ng said in a statement today.

Ng also questioned Lee’s attendance at meetings on flood mitigation in Petaling Jaya.

He explained Lee had been invited in his capacity as the area’s MP to meetings organised by the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) and at state level, but had attended few of them.

On one occasion, Ng said, Lee sent a special officer in his place, although no issues were raised by the representative.

The same, he added, applied to discussions on the Petaling Jaya Local Plan, which covers land use, traffic, public facilities and the city’s future development.

Ng further said Lee had been invited to those discussions but again did not attend most of the meetings.

He questioned the basis of Lee’s complaint about being denied an avenue to raise issues when there had been opportunities to do so directly with the authorities involved.

“If you really want to solve people’s problems, first be present at the table where solutions are being worked out,” he stressed.

Ng also disputed Lee’s claim that he was confused about Anwar’s strategy and the direction of the government.

He said Lee could have raised those concerns directly with Anwar and other party leaders at MPP meetings.

“If there are questions, ask. If you disagree, debate. If you have a better proposal, put it forward,” he said.

Ng cited Lee’s previous involvement in discussions on the separation of the attorney-general and public prosecutor roles, saying Lee had raised his views and the government subsequently made improvements.

He said the episode showed that Lee had been able to raise policy concerns within the party.

Ng also questioned Lee’s participation in programmes and appearances alongside Parti BERSAMA while he was still a PKR member and MP.

He said Lee was entitled to make his own political decisions, but questioned why he remained in PKR while taking part in activities involving another political party.

Ng rejected any suggestion that the disciplinary action against Lee was taken simply because he had spoken out.

He said political parties could take action against members who supported or assisted rival parties, citing disciplinary action previously taken by UMNO and Bersatu in similar circumstances.

“The public also has the right to know his actual political position,” he said.

Ng said Lee’s conduct before the disciplinary action was also relevant to understanding the circumstances surrounding it.

He added that elected representatives were expected to do more than issue public statements, including attending meetings, engaging the relevant agencies and following up on issues affecting their constituents.

“People want solutions, not just statements,” he said. - October 2, 2026
