Another source told FMT that he may officially join PKR after the conclusion of the ongoing parliamentary session. With PKR elections scheduled for April and May 2025, some party leaders are keen on having him participate in the party polls, potentially signaling a fast-tracked leadership role.
For now, Tengku Zafrul remains tight-lipped. He previously stated that any decision regarding his political allegiance would be discussed with Umno president Dato' Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi first.

The timing of Tengku Zafrul’s move raises eyebrows, especially with ongoing speculation about a possible power shuffle in Selangor. Rumors suggest a scenario where Selangor MB Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari could move to the federal government, paving the way for Tengku Zafrul to take over as MB. This potential “Langkah Kota Raja”, a reference to political maneuvers similar to the infamous Langkah Kajang, has sparked heated debate among political observers.
However, Amirudin has dismissed these claims outright. In a recent statement, he affirmed his commitment to leading Selangor until the end of his term, reinforcing the state’s economic stability and supporting the Unity Government. Citing the advice of Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, Amirudin made it clear that he has no intention of stepping down.
What’s Next for Tengku Zafrul?
If Tengku Zafrul does join PKR, his political career could take a significant turn. His extensive corporate and ministerial background makes him a valuable asset to any party. However, whether he will be positioned for a key role in Selangor, an envoy posting in Washington, or a federal ministerial appointment remains uncertain.
