Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has categorically rejected the idea of establishing a second casino in Malaysia. Speaking at the Qatar Economic Forum (QEF) 2024, Anwar made it clear that his administration is prioritizing sectors such as digital transformation, energy transition, and artificial intelligence (AI) to drive the country's future growth.
In his dual capacity as Prime Minister and Finance Minister, Anwar emphasized that these sectors are sufficient to propel Malaysia forward. He stated unequivocally, "There is no need for a second casino license in the country." This stance reflects his administration's commitment to fostering a robust and sustainable economic landscape through technological and innovative advancements rather than expanding the gambling industry.
During a plenary session moderated by Haslinda Amin, Anwar reiterated his firm opposition to a second casino, underscoring that Malaysia's focus lies in more progressive and forward-thinking industries. When questioned about the possibility of a second casino under the MADANI government, Anwar responded with a resolute, "Affirmative no! Malaysia does not have to venture into the second casino business. We are focusing on digital transformation, energy transition, and AI, and we believe these industries are sufficient to drive the country forward."
Anwar's rejection of a second casino license is not a new position. He has previously dismissed reports suggesting that a second casino might be established in Forest City, Iskandar Puteri, Johor. Since 1969, Malaysia has only issued one casino license, which was granted to Genting. The Genting Group operates casinos not only in Malaysia but also in the United Kingdom, the United States, and Singapore.
Despite Malaysia's unwavering stance on the Palestine-Israel issue, Anwar assured that it has not adversely affected the nation's business environment or its attractiveness to foreign investors. He pointed out that Malaysia continues to draw substantial investments from various global players. "Our position is very clear. We maintain strong relations with China and do not subscribe to xenophobia. Our investments, including those from Germany, the Middle East, and the United States, are still flowing in robustly," Anwar said.
Highlighting Malaysia's prominence in the semiconductor industry, Anwar noted that the country's success in this sector is bolstered by support from the United States. While acknowledging differences in some U.S. policies, Anwar maintained that Malaysia and the United States remain amicable partners. "We may differ on certain policies, which we consider contradictory or hypocritical, but overall, the United States remains a friend," he remarked.
Anwar's participation in the fourth edition of the QEF marks the culmination of his three-day official visit to Qatar. Throughout his visit, he has consistently championed Malaysia's commitment to technological advancement and sustainable development as key drivers of the nation's economic strategy.
The Prime Minister's vision for Malaysia underscores a deliberate shift towards embracing the digital economy and renewable energy. By prioritizing these sectors, Malaysia aims to enhance its global competitiveness and ensure long-term economic resilience. Anwar's steadfast refusal to issue a second casino license reflects his broader strategy of focusing on industries that promise sustainable growth and development.
As Malaysia continues to position itself as a leader in the digital and energy sectors, the government remains committed to creating a conducive environment for innovation and investment. Anwar's forward-thinking approach is designed to leverage Malaysia's strengths in technology and sustainability, ensuring that the country remains on a progressive trajectory.
In summary, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's clear and firm stance against the establishment of a second casino underscores his administration's dedication to digital transformation, energy transition, and artificial intelligence. By fostering these sectors, Malaysia aims to secure a prosperous and sustainable future, leaving no room for expanding the gambling industry.
