Malaysia, a steadfast advocate for Palestinian rights, has reaffirmed its commitment to assisting in the reconstruction of Gaza.

Prime Minister Dato' Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced this during a visit to the East London Mosque in the United Kingdom, where he joined congregants recently for Friday prayers and expressed solidarity with the Palestinian cause.

"We pray the ceasefire will hold," Anwar stated, referring to the three-phase ceasefire agreement facilitated by Egypt, the United States, and Qatar. The agreement, which comes into effect on Sunday (12 Jan 2025), aims to end 15 months of devastating conflict in Gaza that has claimed over 46,700 Palestinian lives and displaced more than two million people. Despite the challenges, Anwar emphasized Malaysia's readiness to contribute to Gaza's rebuilding efforts.

The Prime Minister highlighted Malaysia's recent honor of being invited by Japan to co-chair the Conference on Cooperation among East Asian Countries for Palestinian Development (Ceapad). This platform will focus on mobilizing resources and partnerships to rebuild Gaza's infrastructure and support its people.

While reconstruction is a priority, Anwar reminded the international community of the grave human cost of the conflict. Over 46,700 Palestinian lives have been lost, and more than two million people have been displaced, a humanitarian crisis that cannot be ignored.

In his address, Anwar called for collective international efforts to not only rebuild Gaza but also address the underlying issues that perpetuate the conflict. "Reconstruction is necessary, but it is equally vital to ensure justice and lasting peace for the Palestinian people," he said.

Anwar later highlighted the immense challenges Gaza faces after sustained Israeli attacks since October 2023, which have left the region in ruins.

"The scale of destruction in Gaza is unprecedented, with key facilities like mosques, schools, hospitals, and homes destroyed. The reconstruction cost is estimated at over $1 trillion," Anwar revealed during a press conference with Malaysian media in London.

Malaysia's pledge to aid Gaza highlights its leadership in championing humanitarian and Islamic causes on the global stage. As the world watches the ceasefire unfold, Malaysia stands ready to play its part in ensuring a brighter future for the Palestinian people.
