PETALING JAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has thrown Malaysia’s full weight behind a potential breakthrough in the US-Iran conflict, hailing a proposed ten-point peace plan as a critical opening to halt a widening crisis and steer the region back from the brink.
Welcoming the initiative put forward by Tehran and positively received by the United States, Anwar stated that the proposal could mark a decisive step towards restoring stability, not only in the Middle East but on a global scale.
The Prime Minister stressed that for the initiative to succeed, all negotiations must be conducted with genuine sincerity.
“It is earnestly hoped that the negotiation process will be carried out with a firm resolve to achieve a lasting resolution to the issues facing the region. Peace talks cannot succeed if the proceedings are cloaked in deception and double-dealing,” he said in an official statement.
Anwar also highlighted the necessity for the plan to translate into a broader, durable settlement encompassing Iraq, Lebanon and Yemen.
He further called for an immediate end to the suffering of Palestinians, particularly those in Gaza and urged the international community to guarantee unimpeded humanitarian access to affected civilians.
Anwar commended Pakistan and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif for their “tireless and courageous diplomacy” in facilitating this diplomatic opening.
The breakthrough follows an intense period of tension where United States President Donald Trump had warned of catastrophic military action.
However, on Tuesday, Trump announced via his platform, Truth Social, that he would hold off on planned strikes, citing the key mediatory role played by Shehbaz Sharif and Pakistan’s military chief, General Asim Munir.
Iran said early today that the US has “in principle” accepted a 10-point proposal aimed at ending the war, Anadolu Ajansi reported, citing Iran’s state-run Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB).
Iran’s Supreme National Security Council said the proposal would serve as the framework for negotiations to finalise a broader agreement, although full details were not publicly disclosed.
According to IRIB, the proposal includes guarantees of non-aggression against Iran, continued Iranian control over the Strait of Hormuz and recognition of Tehran’s right to uranium enrichment, as well as the lifting of all US primary and secondary sanctions.
It also includes the termination of resolutions by the United Nations Security Council and the International Atomic Energy Agency Board of Governors, payment of compensation, withdrawal of US combat forces from the region, and an end to hostilities across all fronts, including in Lebanon.
Trump said earlier that Washington would suspend attacks on Iran for two weeks, describing Tehran’s proposal as a “workable basis” for negotiations.
