PM congratulates Amir Daniel for Malaysia's eighth gold medal

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 2 - Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has congratulated national judoka Amir Daniel Abdul Majeed for delivering Malaysia's first-ever Commonwealth Games gold medal in judo.

“Congratulations Amir Daniel for delivering Malaysia’s first gold medal in judo at the Commonwealth Games.

“You have proven that hard work, discipline and fighting spirit can create history. We are all proud,” Anwar said in a social media post today.

Amir Daniel emerged as the champion in the men's under-81 kilogramme event at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games on Aug 1.

The world No. 117 defeated world No. 41 Timothy Meuwsen of South Africa in the final to deliver Malaysia's eighth gold medal of the Games in Glasgow.

The 21-year-old exponent defeated Meuwsen via waza-ari using a kata-guruma technique in a four-minute final bout at the Scottish Event Campus (SEC).
