Malaysia lost around RM277 billion to corruption over the past five years (2018 to 2023) during the terms of four prime ministers.

The four PMs during this time are:

  • January to May 2018: Najib Razak
  • May 2018 to February 2020: Mahathir Mohamad
  • March 2020 to July 2021: Muhyiddin Yassin
  • August 2021 to November 2022: Ismail Sabri Yaakob

These accumulated debts are PMX Anwar Ibrahim’s headache as he wrestles with RM1.5 trillion in debts to be settled.

Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner Azam Baki said while speaking at the launch of the National Anti-Corruption Strategies (NACS) 2024-2028 in Putrajaya.

The RM277 billion estimate was based on the country’s cumulative gross domestic product.

“This huge amount could have been used to help the people in various ways, especially by implementing social projects such as repairing schools and hospitals,” Azam said.

“Unfortunately, we’ve lost it due to corruption.”

Launching NAC, Anwar outlined five core strategies to prevent corrupt practices in the country and they are:

• Enhancing integrity

• Transparency

• Accountability across sectors such as politics, public administration, government procurement

• Law enforcement

• Enforcement in legislative and judicial institutions, and the private sector.

The money lost in corruption could have been used to build expressways, schools, bridges, hospitals, and offices and helped B40 by giving them more subsidies.

The government will launch the National Anti-Corruption Strategy (NACS) 2024-2028, focusing on enhancing anti-corruption efforts to improve governance and integrity in public administration and government-linked companies.

In a statement, MACC chief commissioner Azam said that the NACS, will replace the National Anti-Corruption Plan (NACP) 2019-2023.
