PERIKATAN Nasional (PN) has described its Johor election setback as a moment for reflection, saying the coalition must address organisational weaknesses and strengthen its preparations for future electoral battles.
PN deputy chairman Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man said the loss of three previously held seats exposed weaknesses in coordination, election machinery and internal cohesion that required immediate attention.
"Although PAS and PN were unable to defend the three seats won previously, the people's decision must be accepted with an open heart and used as a basis for reflection and improving our weaknesses," he said.
Tuan Ibrahim, who is also PAS deputy president, said a comprehensive review would be carried out to improve the coalition's readiness for the upcoming Negeri Sembilan state election and future national polls.
He congratulated Barisan Nasional, particularly UMNO, for retaining control of Johor after securing 48 of the 56 state seats contested, with Pakatan Harapan winning the remaining eight.
The PN leader said BN's dominant performance could have wider political consequences, strengthening UMNO's influence within the Federal Unity Government.
"Based on the overall results of the Johor state election, I see that the possibility of GE16 being held in the near future is low.
"What is certain is that BN's big victory has given the party greater influence in determining the policies and direction of the Federal Government. It will become a thorn in the flesh for the PH-BN government," he said.
Tuan Ibrahim said the Johor outcome also reflected continued challenges for Pakatan Harapan in rebuilding public confidence, despite Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's active involvement in the campaign.
"Not only did they fail to capture Johor, but they also lost several seats.
"Although Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is the Prime Minister who has campaigned frequently in state elections, his presence was still insufficient to restore public confidence," he said.
He added that emerging parties such as BERSAMA and MUDA had yet to establish themselves as credible alternatives, while multi-cornered contests had divided opposition votes and benefited BN.
Tuan Ibrahim also questioned whether Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming would honour a campaign-related resignation pledge after PH failed to achieve its Johor election target.
"The people are certainly waiting to see whether that promise will be fulfilled. This DAP leader must honour the commitment that was made.
"If not, DAP will be seen as a party that is only good at making promises but lacks integrity," he said. - July 12, 2026
