Poblacion shooting kills mother, wounds daughter

MANILA, Philippines — A shooting in Makati City on Monday (August 3) claimed the life of a 63-year-old mother and left her 26-year-old daughter wounded, the Southern Police District (SPD) said Tuesday (August 4).

According to the SPD, unidentified assailants shot the victims in front of a hotel near the corner of Makati Avenue and Durban Street in Barangay Poblacion early Monday evening.

“The victims were shot by an unidentified male suspect described as wearing a white shirt, maong shorts, and white shoes. The suspect immediately fled the area on foot after the incident,” police said.

“At present, the identity of the suspect, the motive behind the attack, and other circumstances surrounding the incident remain under thorough investigation,” it added.

The victims were rushed to Makati Medical Center, where the mother was declared dead on arrival, the SPD said.

In a phone interview with reporters, SPD spokesperson Lt. Margaret Panaga identified the wounded daughter as a security personnel at a local hotel.

“They went to a hotel in Barangay Poblacion, Makati, yesterday to celebrate the daughter’s birthday. The mother had arrived in Manila from Zamboanga on August 2,” Panaga said in Filipino.

Panaga added that the family has yet to give consent for an autopsy on the slain mother.

The SPD formed a special investigation team to look into the incident.
