KUALA LUMPUR: Youth and Sports Minister Dr Mohammed Taufiq Johari held discussions with national track cycling ace Datuk Mohd Azizulhasni Awang at his office on Tuesday to outline preparations for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games (LA28).

Dr Mohammed Taufiq said they discussed various plans proposed by the Malaysian National Cycling Federation (MNCF), including continuing training in Melbourne and participating in competitions at the Asian level and the UCI World Cup Series to maximise the accumulation of Olympic qualification points in the sprint and keirin events.

“We also discussed support in sports science and medicine, coaching, as well as research and development of equipment, ensuring that the athlete’s requirements remain in compliance with UCI regulations for the LA28 cycle.

“The National Sports Council (NSC) and the National Sports Institute (NSI) will continue to work alongside MNCF to ensure that these preparations are carried out in an organised and consistent manner,” he said in a Facebook post today.

He also expressed confidence that Azizulhasni’s passion remained undiminished, adding that the nation would continue to support ‘The Pocket Rocketman’ on his journey towards LA28.

Most recently, the two-time Olympic medallist was eliminated in the quarter-finals of the keirin event at the World Championships in Shanghai, China.

Nevertheless, he has achieved notable success for Malaysian cycling, having secured two keirin gold medals, one at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, and another at the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan.
