Cycling star Tadej Pogačar won the Tour de Suisse in commanding fashion on Sunday with another display of dominance on the last stage, completing a successful test two weeks before the start of the Tour de France.

The Slovenian world champion celebrated his third stage win on the fifth and final stage.

After 150.7 kilometres, starting and finishing in Villars-sur-Ollon, Pogačar claimed the mountain-top finish solo ahead of Frenchman Lenny Martinez and Dutchman Bart Lemmen.

The 27-year-old finished the race with an overall lead of 6:32 minutes over Tokyo Olympic champion Richard Carapaz of Ecuador.

Before the final climb, Pogačar was still more than two minutes behind a breakaway group before the Slovenian upped the pace. With 900 metres to go, he finally caught the leading Martinez.

Pogačar, who has completed only 16 race days so far this year, now has 13 wins this season. At the Tour he could draw level with record winners Eddy Merckx of Belgium, Jacques Anquetil and Bernard Hinault of France and Miguel Indurain of Spain with a fifth overall victory.

Also on Sunday, German cyclist Florian Lipowitz delivered an impressive showing in his dress rehearsal for the Tour by claiming two stage wins and overall victory at the Tour of Slovenia.
