
The Chandigarh Police arrested three members of the Bambiha Gang after an exchange of fire near the Sector 43 ISBT in late evening hours on Monday. Those arrested have been identified as Joban, Prabhjot and Ajay.
An assistant sub-inspector (ASI) escaped injury as a bullet fired by the accused got stuck in his bulletproof vest. The police officer has been identified as Keshav. Till the filing of this report, no major injury was reported and all three accused were arrested after a brief chase.
According to official sources, members of the Operations Cell of the Chandigarh Police had reached the spot to arrest the gang members.
As soon as they reached near Sector 43 and started preparing to nab the accused, bullets were fired from the other end.
In retaliation, the police also fired some rounds.
A source said the accused tried to flee in different directions, but police teams acted swiftly and nabbed all three from nearby locations. A special checking was also carried out across the area to nab them.
“The accused have been arrested and will be produced in a court tomorrow. The ASI is perfectly fine and was accompanying the team when these arrests were made,” said a police officer.
Recently, several encounters involving gangsters and Chandigarh Police officials have taken place.
Last month, the Operations Cell of the Chandigarh Police arrested gangster Golu Gohana, who is known accused of supplying illegal arms in the region. He was arrested after a brief encounter near the Sector 25 rally ground.
In January, three men, including two shooters, were arrested after an encounter with the Chandigarh Police Crime Branch near the Sector 39 Grain Market. They were arrested in connection with a firing incident at a pharmacy in Sector 32. The two accused involved in the Sector 32 incident were injured.
