PENAMPANG, Aug 29 — Police have arrested two local men for allegedly posing as enforcement officers and attempting to extort RM1,500 from a foreign national at Kampung Koidupan Sugud here early yesterday.
Penampang district police chief Supt Sammy Newton said the incident occurred at about 12.10am when the suspects, aged 19 and 28, allegedly approached the victim wearing attire resembling enforcement agency uniforms and demanded to see his identification documents.
The suspects then allegedly accused the victim of committing an offence for failing to produce his passport and demanded RM1,500 to settle the matter.
However, their alleged scheme was uncovered when the victim asked them to produce their authority cards.
“The suspects suddenly attempted to flee but were detained by villagers before being handed over to police,” Sammy said in a statement.
Police also seized several pieces of clothing resembling enforcement agency uniforms, which are believed to have been worn by the suspects during the incident.
The case is being investigated under Sections 384 and 170 of the Penal Code for alleged extortion and impersonating a public servant.
Sammy urged the public to remain vigilant when approached by individuals claiming to be enforcement officers.
“Any suspicious incident or behaviour should be reported to police immediately,” he said. — The Borneo Post
