A man who recorded the tense situation of a child being swept away by strong currents in a large drain near Pasir Gudang yesterday said that he can’t swim.

Norhanum Sabtu, 43, said her brother, Nadhir, 20, recorded the video as evidence and not to make it go viral.

“My brother can’t swim; he only recorded it as evidence, not to make it viral.”

“He also shared the video in our family group, and it was not Nadhir who made it viral but someone else,” she said when contacted by Kosmo!.

Norhanum added that about five minutes before the incident, her brother had warned and prohibited the child from playing in the drain area because it was dangerous.

However, the warning was ignored.

“During the incident, my brother was on his way to perform Friday prayers when he heard cries for help. After taking his prayer mat and closing the car door, he heard the screams again, calling him.”

“It was around 1 pm, and the rain caused the drain water to flow rapidly,” she added.

The one-minute and 35-second video went viral, showing the incident of a child being swept away by strong currents in a drain.

The incident, which went viral on social media, also drew various comments from netizens questioning the actions of the individual recording the video without trying to help save the child.

“The boy and his friend were heading to his uncle’s house after Friday prayers when he slipped and fell into the drain. He was swept away by the fast-moving current due to heavy rain,” said Seri Alam police chief ACP Mohd Sohaimi Ishak in a statement today (April 5).

Mohd Sohaimi said a passersby rescued the boy about 100 meters from where he fell. He escaped with minor scrapes to his knee and elbow.

He urged parents and guardians to supervise their children, especially during the rainy season, and avoid risky outdoor activities.
