Police investigate MAFS Australia over 'inappropriate content' claims

An investigation has been opened into Married At First Sight (MAFS) Australia after a report of “inappropriate content” being aired.

New South Wales Police said it had begun the inquiry and passed the matter to the Western Australia Police Force.

A police statement read: “On Monday, August 24 2026, officers attached to South Sydney Police Area Command commenced an investigation following a report of inappropriate content being shared.

“Following inquiries, the matter will be referred to WA Police Force.”

The Australian programme is made by a different production company from the UK edition.

Endemol Shine Australia, which produces MAFS Australia, and Channel Nine, which broadcasts the show, have both been approached for comment. The Western Australia Police Force has also been contacted for comment.

The police inquiry follows a BBC Panorama documentary broadcast in May, in which two women who appeared in the UK edition alleged rape by their on-screen husbands and a third alleged sexual misconduct.

All three men deny the claims made against them.

MAFS UK, which aired on Channel 4, is itself facing an Ofcom investigation over an unspecified complaint.

A cast member from the UK show was arrested on suspicion of rape in June.

The Metropolitan Police told the BBC after the arrest: “This relates to an ongoing investigation, being led by the Met Police.

“He has since been bailed while inquiries remain ongoing.”

Neither the arrested man nor the alleged victim can be named.

Channel 4 began a review into contributor welfare in April, shortly after the BBC contacted the broadcaster about the accusations featured in Panorama.

The broadcaster’s chief executive Priya Dogra has said reports that the show had been cancelled were “wholly inaccurate” and “no decision has been made” regarding the broadcast of the next series.

MPs on the Culture, Media and Sport Committee have written to Channel 4 and Ofcom about their response to the allegations in the BBC documentary.

Billed as a “bold social experiment”, MAFS sees single people agree to “marry” total strangers, after meeting for the first time at their mock weddings, with the couples then going on honeymoon and living together.
