Police maintain tight security measures

THE Philippine National Police (PNP) maintained heightened security at major transport terminals and key thoroughfares as millions of Filipinos return home from a long holiday weekend.

“As travelers make their way back to their homes, schools, and workplaces, the PNP remains fully mobilized to keep roads secure, maintain public order, and respond swiftly to any incident that may disrupt travel. Our priority is to ensure that every Filipino reaches their destination safely,” said PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. in a statement on Monday.

Nartatez directed all police regional offices to sustain visibility patrols along major highways, bus terminals, seaports, airports, and transport interchanges, particularly in areas where large volumes of passengers and vehicles are expected.

He also reminded motorists to exercise caution and strictly observe road safety rules.

“No destination is worth risking lives for. We urge motorists to follow traffic laws, avoid speeding, never drive under the influence of alcohol, refrain from using mobile phones while driving, and take adequate rest before long trips,” he said.

Millions flocked to cemeteries across the country during the observance of All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day. In Manila alone, more than 1.16 million people visited the city’s two major cemeteries.

The National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) reported confiscating 4,922 prohibited items from cemetery visitors during All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day in Metro Manila.

LtCol. Hazel Asilo, NCRPO spokesman, said Monday there were no reported disturbances in cemeteries, bus terminals and other places of convergence in the capital region.

The confiscated items included cigarette lighters, cigarettes and electronic cigarettes or vapes, Asilo said.

Despite annual reminders about cemetery regulations, some visitors continued to bring prohibited items, either because they were unaware of the restrictions or ignored the rules, she said.
