KUALA LUMPUR – Film director and rapper Wee Meng Chee, better known as Namewee, is believed to have had a “special relationship” with the late Taiwanese influencer Hsieh Yu-Hsin, police said.

Kuala Lumpur police chief Commissioner Datuk Fadil Marsus said investigations indicated the pair were not merely acquaintances.

“They are friends, and they have other relationships that I will not elaborate on,” he said when met after the Deepavali celebration at the Kuala Lumpur police contingent headquarters today.

“I do not need to reveal the full extent, but it is a ‘special’ relationship. They were more than just close friends. Our investigations also show that the suspect had known the victim for many years and that they had worked together professionally.”

He said police were still awaiting the full post-mortem and toxicology reports, which are crucial to determining the cause of death.

“We are still waiting for the post-mortem results. We also need to establish whether there was any sexual involvement forced upon the victim, but based on preliminary findings, there is no evidence to suggest sexual assault at this stage,” he said.

Fadil added that Hsieh’s body has yet to be claimed.

“The toxicology report will take some time. We will make our recommendations to the Deputy Public Prosecutor once we have all the necessary reports,” he said.

He also confirmed that several individuals had attempted to claim the body, but police could not release it as their identities or authorisation could not be verified.

Hsieh, 31, was found dead in a hotel room in the capital on October 22. It is understood that she had met Namewee at the hotel earlier to discuss filming a video project. He was said to have discovered her unresponsive in the bathroom.

Police initially opened a sudden death report, but later reclassified the case as murder following further investigation.

On the day Hsieh was found, authorities arrested Namewee at the hotel after discovering nine blue pills suspected to be ecstasy in the room. He later tested positive for amphetamine, methamphetamine, ketamine and THC.

He was subsequently charged with drug possession and consumption at the Jalan Duta Court on October 24 and pleaded not guilty. He was allowed bail of RM4,000 for each charge.

On November 5, Namewee turned up at the Dang Wangi district police headquarters to assist in the murder investigation. He was detained and initially remanded for six days, followed by a three-day extension, which runs until Thursday. - November 11, 2025
