MALAYSIAN rapper Wee Meng Chee, better known as Namewee, is believed to have been in a close relationship with a Taiwanese social media influencer who was found dead in a Kuala Lumpur hotel last month, police said.
Kuala Lumpur Police Chief Datuk Fadil Marsus confirmed that investigations revealed Namewee had been with the victim from overseas until their arrival in Malaysia.
“So far, the investigation has found that the man indeed had a special relationship with the victim. We have also recorded statements from all the witnesses involved in this case,” he said during a press conference at the Kuala Lumpur Police Headquarters after attending a Deepavali celebration.
Fadil described the investigation as progressing positively and said authorities are awaiting the full autopsy and toxicology reports. “The man is also cooperating in assisting the investigation,” he added.
The police chief also noted that the victim’s body has not yet been claimed by her family.
“There were individuals who tried to claim the body, but they were not allowed due to lack of authorisation.
“We are asking anyone who has information about the victim’s family to come forward to assist the investigation.
“The investigation is ongoing and we will continue to pursue it based on the evidence available. We will submit a proposal for charges to the Deputy Public Prosecutor’s office in the near future once the investigation file is completed,” Fadil said.
Namewee, 42, voluntarily surrendered to the Dang Wangi Police District Headquarters on 5 November to assist in the investigation. His remand has since been extended for an additional three days.
Authorities previously classified the case as sudden death, but it is now being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.
Fadil confirmed that Namewee was reportedly present at the location when the incident occurred and that all angles, including the last individuals with the victim, remain under investigation. - November 11, 2025
