A police officer shot and critically injured a man at a house in the German state of Hesse on Thursday evening, police said.

Officers had gone to see the 66-year-old man in northern Hesse on suspicion of drink-driving and were threatened by him with a firearm, police said in a statement.

The circumstances in which the man was shot are still under investigation.

The injured man was taken to hospital after the incident in the northern Schwalm-Eder district, south of the city of Kassel. Police did not disclose the exact location.

Police initially provided no further details about the incident and could not immediately be reached for further comment.
