POLICE are investigating whether a popular online game, 'Roblox', may have influenced a violent incident in which a six-year-old boy was seriously injured after his throat was slashed at a home in Batu Pahat earlier this week.
Johor Police Chief Datuk Kamarul Zaman Mamat said the victim, who also sustained stab wounds to his body, is believed to have been attacked by his nine-year-old brother. The boy’s parents have been detained to assist in the investigation.
“Initial investigations suggest the injuries suffered by the victim were likely inflicted by his older brother,” he said. “While the motive is still under investigation, there is a possibility that it is linked to the brother’s use of a gaming application on his phone — namely 'Roblox'.”
Speaking to reporters after the Johor Police Monthly Assembly at the state police headquarters, he said preliminary findings showed the older brother had been playing 'Roblox' excessively and had accumulated nearly one million points in the game.
“Based on early questioning, the suspect’s brother may have been affected by the game. He appeared to experience hallucinations at night, as though being instructed to harm his family members,” he said.
It is believed the boy used a kitchen knife to attack his younger brother after the victim allegedly damaged his mobile phone, causing him to lose all his accumulated points.
“Nevertheless, police are continuing their investigation,” he said.
The victim is currently receiving treatment at Hospital Batu Pahat and is reported to be in stable condition.
“The investigation is still in its early stages, and we have yet to record the victim’s statement as he has not fully recovered,” he said.
“Both children are now under the supervision of the Social Welfare Department (JKM) as they are minors. The investigation papers have been referred to the Johor State Legal Adviser for further action.”
The incident reportedly occurred around 5.30 a.m. on Monday when the six-year-old was found with a deep cut to the right side of his neck, believed to have been inflicted with a sharp weapon.
Batu Pahat District Police Chief Assistant Commissioner Shahrulanuar Mushaddat Abdullah Sani said the investigation began after the boy’s 41-year-old mother lodged a police report.
“She claimed she woke up and discovered her son with severe injuries to his neck before rushing him to Hospital Sultanah Nora Ismail (HSNI) for treatment,” he was quoted as saying. - October 29, 2025
