AUTHORITIES are investigating a woman suspected of making a seditious statement during a solidarity rally held at the Tawau Municipal Council square on Sunday night, with police confirming that multiple reports have been lodged.
Tawau District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Jasmin Hussin, said the speech in question was allegedly made during the ‘Himpunan Solidarity Justice For Zara’ gathering and was believed to contain remarks touching on the position of the Yang di-Pertua Negeri Sabah, Tun Musa Aman.
“Initial investigations revealed that the woman was among those given the opportunity to speak during the rally. The speech is alleged to contain seditious elements against the Head of State and has caused public unease,” he said when contacted.
Police have opened an investigation paper under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act 1948, Section 506 and Section 505(b) of the Penal Code, and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.
While no arrests have been made thus far, Jasmin confirmed that the Several witnesses are also being called to assist with the investigation.
He stressed that the investigation would be conducted transparently and in accordance with due process to ensure fairness for all parties involved.
Jasmin also urged the public to refrain from making seditious remarks that could threaten public order, warning that firm action would be taken against any such acts. - Sept 2, 2025
