Police seize Fairlady, 4WD in Tawau street racing crackdown

TAWAU: Police seized two vehicles, including a Fairlady sports car, suspected of being excessively modified during an operation to curb illegal street racing and road hooliganism at several hotspots in the district.

District Police Chief ACP Rosdi Mat Jusoh said the operation was conducted under Ops Samseng Jalanan (OSJ) and a roadblock by personnel from the District Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division (BSPTD) between 10.30pm on Saturday and 2am on Sunday.

He said OSJ was conducted at two hotspots — T2 Jalan Apas and One Arena Jalan Chong Thien Vun — while the roadblock was held at Batu 2 Jalan Apas.

Rosdi said, apart from the Fairlady, police also seized a four-wheel-drive (4WD) vehicle under Section 64(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

He said both vehicles would be handed over to the Road Transport Department (JPJ) for further action under its Special Extreme Operation targeting excessively modified vehicles.

“During the OSJ and roadblock, police inspected 80 vehicles comprising 30 motorcycles, 30 cars, 18 4WDs and two lorries, as well as 64 individuals comprising 45 men and 19 women,” he said in a statement here on Monday.

Rosdi said 14 summonses were issued for various traffic offences, including failure to install side mirrors, improper registration numbers, exhaust modifications, driving without a Class B2 licence and failure to display a ‘P’ plate.

“Other offences included exhaust modifications and the use of lights other than white, while action was also taken against a 4WD for using an unsuitable vehicle,” he said.

He said four other vehicles, comprising one car and three motorcycles, were referred for advocacy sessions to raise awareness among road users about the importance of complying with regulations and prioritising safety.

“No arrests or untoward incidents were reported during the operation. However, we remind the public to always comply with traffic regulations and the law,” he said.

He added that police would continue intensifying enforcement operations to curb road hooliganism and ensure road users complied with regulations for the safety of all.
