Policewoman reunites with teacher who helped pay her STPM fees

MORE than two decades after a quiet act of kindness changed her life, a Malaysian police officer has finally come face-to-face with the teacher she never forgot.

Ain Ahmad recently shared her story on TikTok in conjunction with Teacher’s Day last month, paying tribute to her former teacher, Koay Aun Chuan, a retired educator from SMK Kuala Ketil.

Despite coming from different racial backgrounds, Ain said Koay never hesitated to support her when she was struggling as a student more than 20 years ago.

“Even though we were of different races, Teacher Koay always helped me when my family was poor,” she wrote.

The incident dates back to 2003, when Ain was in Form Six. At the time, she faced a major setback — she could not afford to pay for her STPM examination fees.

With only a week left before the deadline, Koay, who taught Geography, approached her to ask about the payment. Ain explained that it was not a matter of unwillingness, but that she simply did not have the money.

Desperate, she even considered pawning her belongings to raise the funds.

However, Koay stepped in and helped her secure the financial assistance she needed, allowing her to sit for the exam.

His kindness did not end there.

Ain recalled that whenever she needed money for books, photocopying, or other school expenses, Koay would quietly leave cash on her desk without drawing attention.

“Even if it was just 20 sen for photocopying, he would give it to me,” she said.

She added that Koay often reminded his students that education was the key to changing their lives — advice that stayed with her long after she left school.

Now serving as a police officer, Ain said she had spent years trying to locate the teacher who made a lasting impact on her life.

She eventually managed to reconnect with him recently, first sending a fruit basket as a token of appreciation.

During a recent holiday, she finally met him in person, fulfilling a long-held wish.

Koay also shared that he had been involved in a road accident several years ago but is now in good health. Over the years, many of his former students have visited him.

The reunion has since resonated widely online, with many praising Koay’s quiet generosity and Ain’s gratitude in remembering the teacher who once helped her when she needed it most. – June 1, 2026
