Polish authorities on Saturday found a drone that had crashed into a field near the border with the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad.

"Initial investigation suggests that it is probably a military drone that was deployed for surveillance purposes but was not combat-ready," the Polish military police reported on Facebook.

Police and military police received a report during the morning that an unknown flying object had been found near the town of Bartoszyce. The military police are conducting an investigation supervised by state prosecutors.

Private radio broadcaster RMF reported that the drone had an inscription with Cyrillic lettering, possibly indicating Russian or Ukrainian origin. It also said that the drone was fitted with several cameras. This has not been confirmed by police.

Public broadcaster TVP Info reported later that the drone had been found at the village of Osieka to the south of Bartoszyce, some 20 kilometres from the Kaliningrad border.

A defence expert told the broadcaster that the drone was a surveillance drone that had come down unintentionally and not a combat drone.
