PENAMPANG: United Progressive Kinabalu Organisation (Upko) President Datuk Seri Wilfred Madius Tangau and his deputy Datuk Ewon Benedick will let party members decide on who will hold the party’s presidency in the next term.
“We both agree to respect the views and decisions of all party divisions.
“General meetings at the division level are underway. There are still six divisions that will meet and then the Upko Congress will be held.
“But, most importantly, our focus is on Upko’s vision. We will continue to raise the issues of the people and the rights of Sabah together,” Ewon said in a statement, Wednesday.
This year’s Upko Congress is expected to see an election for the Supreme Council, including the post of president.
Earlier, Madius met with Ewon to discuss the party’s affairs and current political issues, which he (Madius) shared on his Facebook page.
His post earned praise from netizens, saying Madius and Ewon’s discussions signified their maturity in politics while embodying a true heart of service for Sabahans.
“Chats with Ewon were related to party matters and current political issues. With God’s permission, we will build and fight with Upko’s vision to lead the people’s struggle,” Madius said in the post.
He also invited Ewon to officiate the triennial general meeting of Upko Tuaran’s Women and Youth wings, as well as Young Generation Movement on July 12.
Commenting on the meeting with Madius, Ewon said it was a normal yet important agenda, especially before they both attend the coming Parliament and State Legislative Assembly sittings to voice out the people’s issues.
“We discussed the issues that we will bring up in our respective sittings, especially the people’s challenges due to the sharp rise in the cost of living and matters related to Sabah’s rights through the 1963 Malaysia Agreement (MA63) and the Federal Constitution.
“I will deliver my debate speech not only on behalf of the people of Kadamaian but also the party.
“We are also discussing our initial suit to the Federal Government related to the collection of 40 per cent of federal revenue in Sabah which will be heard on July 14,” he said.
