It’s not often that we see Mother of Dragons infiltrating a Soviet intelligence system to work as an undercover agent for the Americans. Game of Thrones fame Emilia Clarke and Five Feet Apart actress Haley Lu Richardson team up to deliver a brilliantly twisted spy thriller TV series, Ponies. The Peacock TV series, set in the late 70s, follows two seemingly naive wives working in Moscow as secretaries at the US Embassy. Their lives turn upside down when their husbands, working undercover for the CIA, are mysteriously killed. They decide to join the force as spies, and the CIA lets them. Why, you may ask? Because why would anyone suspect women of working dangerous jobs? That’s the entire story of Bea and Twila turning ‘Persons Of No Interest’ A.K.A Ponies.
Created by Susanna Fogel and David Iserson, the series premiered on HBO Max on 16 January 2026. Apart from Emilia Clarke and Haley Lu Richardson, it features a talented cast ensemble including Adrian Lester, Artjom Gilz, Nicholas Podany, Petro Ninovskyi, Vic Michaelis and more. The eight-episode series is a complete work of fiction. However, history enthusiasts may find a few real-life events tied to fiction, such as the Elton John concert that took place in 1977.
The series is comically twisted and gripping enough to keep you hooked through all eight episodes. Clarke as Beatrice blends in as an American with Russian roots. She has zeal, courage and untapped potential, all sacrificed for the sake of her husband, who tragically dies in the operation. But the tragedy turns into a catalyst for her self-discovery as a brave woman who dared to face one of the most dangerous Soviet agents. On the other hand, Richardson as Twila is the heart of the series. She is effortlessly comical and has the best character trope throughout the series.
The new TV series Ponies is a binge-worthy spy thriller that will keep you busy through the weekend. However, you may have to come back to see Bea and Twila back in action to deal with the consequences of the shocking ending. Let’s uncover what happens at the end of the latest American series while also exploring the possible plot details of the second season.

After the death of her husband, Chris Grant (Louis Boyer), Bea (Emilia Clarke) decides to join the CIA as a spy to discover the truth behind his death. Twila (Richardson), who seemed to have issues in her marriage with Tom Hasbeck (John Macmillan), also decides to join her to uncover if they really died in the crash, as the CIA told them. Dane (Adrian Lester) and his right-hand man, Ray (Nicholas Podany), assign Bea her fake Russian identity, Nadiya, to seduce Andrei Vasiliev (Artjom Gilz), a dangerous KBS agent. He also gets them acquianted to Sasha (Petro Ninovskyi), a Russian who is now working for them as a mole to transfer important information.
While Bea attempts to seduce Andrei, Twila discovers the deaths of several sex workers under mysterious circumstances. Together, they discover that one of the murdered sex workers, Ganyla, is Sasha’s sister. Twila decides to probe into the matter even further and locates a brothel to speak with other sex workers. Meanwhile, Bea desperately tries to keep her cover hidden while meeting with Andrei every other day.
Andrei’s secret weapon
The guilt of getting intimate with Andrei washes over Bea. While lying in her bed one night, she discovers a videotape. It was a video of her husband, Chris, engaging in sexual activities with Ganyla. Heartbroken, she confronts Dane, who consoles her by revealing that Chris was working with the Soviets as the CIA’s mole and had to prove his loyalty to them. This tape was the Soviets’ leverage over him. Bea is shattered but decides to continue with the mission.
Dane and the team learns that Andrei has his personal stack of tapes of blackmailing everyone, including the Soviets, for his own benefit. That explained how he rose through the ranks quicker than anybody else. They also learn that he was killing all the sex workers after paying them to sleep with powerful men. He also killed Sasha’s sister, Ganyla. They must figure out a way to get his stash of tapes to use against him.
Meanwhile, Bea finds a card with “Winged horse over the entire world” written in Russian, except it wasn’t Chris’ handwriting. Over the days, the duo find logos of a winged horse over the entire world across many places, including bars, cars, doors, and Ganyla’s sweater that Sasha wore. They deduce that the logo is somehow connected with all the events.
Babushka’s solo mission
Twila follows a lead — an old woman named Vera who claims to have crucial information about Catarpillar. He is an unidentified agent who gave the coordinates of the secret Kompromat Facility to Chris and Tom, who died trying to locate it. Vera reveals to Twila that she was on the plane with Chris and Tom when they had to make an emergency landing. They got down to scout the area when they were killed by the soldiers. Vera revealed that her husband, Tom, betrayed the CIA as he was working with the Soviets. He was the one who got Chris killed. Their meeting ends tragically after Vera slips off the bridge and dies, leaving Twila with hundreds of unanswered questions about her husband’s truth.
Dane ropes in Bea’s grandmother to disguise herself as Vera to get the coordinates of the Kompromat Facility from Catarpillar. The mission doesn’t go as planned, and she gets taken by Andrei. Dane manages to rescue her, but not before the grandmother secures a tape from Catarpillar, whom she accidentally met in prison. Granny demands that Dane fly her to her hometown in Belarus to meet her old friend, Sofia. Dane follows her in Belarus, watching over her, talking to Sofia. He finally shows himself to Granny and takes her to a secretive location where Chris is alive and well.

Andrei finally finds out that Bea is a spy, prompting her to run away in fear with Twila. They manage to escape with Sasha and end up at Andrei’s secret hideout. They find dozens of shampoo bottles with tapes hidden in them. They load the evidence in the car and prepare to run away when they get attacked by Andrei’s assailants. The scuffle ends with Sasha being critically injured and Bea killing a woman. Andrei chases them in a car and ends up crashing.
Sasha is extracted by the Americans, while Twila and Bea take away an unconscious Andrei to divulge information from him at the embassy. He shockingly reveals that it was Bea’s husband, Chris, who was working with the Soviets. Moreover, it was the American CIA who got Ganyla killed and made it look like the Soviets did it so that Sasha could work for them. As Bea tries to extract more information from him, a fire breaks out in the embassy’s storage room.
Who is the mole?
One of the biggest mysteries of the first season of the Ponies TV series was the identity of the mole in the CIA. Agent Ray was the one who discovered that there was a mole working for the Soviets. Interestingly, his wife, Cheryl (Vic Michaelis), also the office manager of the embassy, turns out to be the mole all along. It was a shocker as nobody really suspected her to be one. But that’s the entire premise of the show — underestimating women.
Cheryl causes the fire in the storage room, effectively burning down all the 10-years worth of evidence against the Soviets, including all of Andrei’s tapes. The fire alarm goes off as Twila and Bea watch in horror as KBS agents disguised as firemen sweep into the room to confiscate all the important documents. Andrei walks out looking smug while the intrepid duo face guns pointed directly at them.
What is the potential plot of Ponies Season 2?
The second season of the Ponies TV series will explore more unexpected adventures of Twila and Bea. While we don’t know whether Sasha survives his injuries, the wild duo is most certainly caught by Andrei. Will Dane be able to retrieve them safely? Moreover, the KBS agents have all the documents from the embassy, including the CIA’s secret documents. On the other hand, we find out that Chris is alive, and all we get is a “Hello” from him before the screen goes blank. What is he doing in Belarus, and why did he decide to reveal himself to Bea’s grandmother?
While our dynamic duo’s lives hang in the balance, we see a single bottle of shampoo in Twila’s bathroom. If the CIA manages to reach there before anyone, they could find at least one piece of evidence to incriminate Andrei. One of the biggest unanswered questions would be, “How will Bea react to Chris being alive?” We might have to wait for quite a while before we get all the answers.
