Portsmouth icon Alan Knight dies after cancer battle

  • Portsmouth Football Club has announced the death of former goalkeeper and club legend Alan Knight at the age of 65.
  • Knight made 801 appearances for Pompey after making his debut as a 16-year-old in 1978, ranking second in all-time club appearances.
  • During his playing career, the London-born shot-stopper featured in three promotion-winning campaigns and reached the FA Cup semi-finals in 1992.
  • After retiring in 2000, Knight took up coaching and managerial roles across various clubs before returning to Portsmouth as a goalkeeping coach and club ambassador.
  • He publicly disclosed a prostate cancer diagnosis in October 2024 to help raise awareness and encourage people to get tested.
