Postponed Pacquiao-Mayweather rematch eyed for January 2027

MANILA, Philippines — The postponed rematch between Filipino boxing great Manny Pacquiao and undefeated American Floyd Mayweather Jr. may take place in January 2027.

Jas Mathur, CEO of Pacquiao’s MP Promotions, said that things on Mayweather's camp has to be ironed out first before the two boxing legends could meet at the ring for the first time since 2015.

Mayweather defeated Pacquiao in that bout dubbed as "Fight of the Century" via unanimous decision.

“The Floyd fight that everybody wants to know about, that fight is being postponed,” said Mathur.

“Right now the new tentative date that we have is going to be at the end of January but there's still other technicalities that need to be addressed before and based on other contractual obligations that Floyd has. So those need to be met in order for this to happen."

It was announced last month that the highly-anticipated rematch between the 47-year-old Pacquiao (62-8-3) and the 49-year-old Mayweather (50-0) targeted for September 19 at The Sphere in Las Vegas was postponed indefinitely.

The Pacquiao camp blamed the postponement on “a volatile mix of federal lawsuits, scheduling overbooks, and financial gridlock completely surrounding the Mayweather camp”.

With the Mayweather rematch not happening at least this year, the Pacquiao camp is looking at an exhibition fight before the year ends while also not ruling out a pro bout.

“We're working on a few different fights right now for him. Presently there's likely going to be an exhibition that we're trying to put together in the fourth quarter of this year,” said Mathur.

“Nobody is set, no opponent is set in stone yet. We're still working on that. There's a possibility (of a pro-fight). There is a possibility. That's there, but nothing is confirmed yet. So there's nothing that's been solidified or confirmed at all yet,” he added.

Rolly Romero and Ryan Garcia were some of the names that were at least being considered for a pro fight against Pacquiao, the world's only 8-division boxing champ.

"I actually wanted to put the Rolly fight together, that was my plan from the beginning. I was working on, I was even talking about it last year because I'm with Manny already and Rolly's also with me in my company in Limitless, so Rolly's also a good, dear friend so it's, that's a very direct situation, but Rolly is fighting,  he has another fight against Teo (Teofimo Lopez) , yes," said Mathur.

"(Ryan Garcia? Possibility, yes, we've also, we've brought that up, we've also brought that up, but Ryan has another fight, so, you know, everything's on the table, it's all on the table."
