Kenny Atkinson guided the Cavaliers to the Eastern Conference Finals, but Cleveland’s sweep by the Knicks has still put his future in question.

One flashpoint came in Game 1, when Cleveland blew a 22-point lead and Atkinson waited too long to call timeout as New York gathered rhythm.

That collapse helped shape the series, and it has left questions over whether the Cavs could consider a different voice next season.

Jason Kidd emerges as possible Cavs option if Kenny Atkinson departs

Aaron Goldhammer has suggested Jason Kidd could be considered inside Cleveland if Atkinson does not remain in charge.

He said on ESPN 850 Cleveland: “I have a theory, kind of confirmed by some people that I know around the league, that I think the Cavs will seriously look at Jason Kidd. And I know that if the LeBron thing is in play, then LeBron has a great relationship with Jason Kidd. He has a lot of respect for Kidd. Kidd has been his assistant coach for a long time.”

That angle matters because LeBron James’ next move is not settled. He has not confirmed retirement, a Lakers return or a move elsewhere.

Reports have also linked James with interest from other teams such as Golden State Warriors, which makes any Cleveland planning around him more relevant.

Kidd would not guarantee anything, but his past connection with James could help if the Cavs try to make a reunion part of their summer thinking.
