At least 8 people have died and more than 1.4 million are displaced after Typhoon Fung-wong tore through the northwestern Philippines before moving toward Taiwan.

The storm triggered floods, landslides and power cuts across several provinces, forcing mass evacuations and flight cancellations.

Fung-wong made landfall in Aurora province late Sunday with winds reaching 185 kph, weakening as it crossed northern Luzon.

More than 300,000 people remain in evacuation centres as authorities clear blocked roads and restore power.

The disaster comes a week after Typhoon Kalmaegi left over 220 dead, underlining the Philippines’ growing vulnerability to extreme weather.
