To ensure religious bodies propagate and practice steps to reduce plastic waste, the Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) has initiated a drive across Punjab, starting from Patiala.
As part of its ongoing campaign against single-use plastic (SUP) and in continuation of activities undertaken around World Environment Day, a team from the PPCB visited Gurdwara Sri Dukhniwaran Sahib, Patiala, and met with the head granthi and the management to discuss measures for reducing plastic waste generated during religious activities.
During the interaction, PPCB appealed to the gurdwara management to replace conventional plastic polythene bags used for distribution of parshad with environmentally friendly compostable bags and to institutionalise this transition as a permanent practice.
“The gurdwara management responded positively and expressed support for promoting sustainable alternatives in religious sewa,” said PPCB officials.
“The board will continue engaging with religious bodies across the state and will also appeal to the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) to facilitate the adoption of compostable alternatives for parshad distribution and other religious activities across Gurdwaras in Punjab,” officials added.
