Premier League fans to hear live in-game exchanges between referees and players

  • In-game exchanges between Premier League referees and players will be broadcast live for the first time this season in a bid to increase transparency in match officiating.
  • Pushed by chief refereeing officer Howard Webb, domestic rights-holders Sky Sports and TNT Sports will air one or two live clips per round of fixtures captured by head-mounted RefCams worn by referees.
  • Under International Football Association Board rules, live audio regarding Video Assistant Referee (VAR) incidents will remain prohibited, limiting live broadcasts to on-field interactions only.
  • The relaxed regulations take effect as the Premier League season begins on Friday night, with defending champions Arsenal hosting newly promoted Coventry City at the Emirates Stadium.
  • Meanwhile, Manchester United will travel to Hull City on Saturday, while Liverpool are due to face Newcastle at St James’ Park on Sunday.
