The Sarawak government has expressed reservations about the extensive personal information required by the Central Database Hub (PADU), as shared by Sarawak Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.

Abdul Karim disclosed that the issue had been discussed within the state Cabinet, with plans to request modifications tailored to Sarawak's specific needs.

"We have our reservations. We are not opposed, but we need clarification from the Economy Ministry. There are certain details that PADU doesn't necessarily need to ask for," he told reporters after launching the 27th Rainforest World Music Festival.

Abdul Karim also highlighted the broad range of personal data required by PADU, including sensitive information such as bank accounts and investments. He expressed concern, emphasizing the importance of citizen privacy.

"I don't think that is the right way to treat citizens. Everyone has a right to privacy," he said.

Questioning the necessity of PADU, Abdul Karim mentioned existing systems like eKasih, which are designed to identify and assist the impoverished.

He urged the government to be cautious in implementing PADU, suggesting a more targeted approach rather than a universal registration requirement.

"If PADU is intended to help the poor, let the poor register. But it shouldn't be mandatory for everyone," he added.

Abdul Karim emphasized the need for the government to consider the implications of PADU on individual privacy rights and suggested that a more focused approach would be more appropriate. He suggested that if PADU's purpose is to assist the underprivileged, the registration should be voluntary for those who seek help, rather than mandatory for all citizens.

The Sarawak government's stance reflects a growing concern over the balance between data collection for public benefit and the protection of individual privacy. The discussion around PADU highlights the importance of ensuring that government initiatives respect citizens' rights and are transparent about their objectives and data usage.

Abdul Karim's call for a more tailored approach to data collection underscores the need for careful consideration and dialogue between the government and stakeholders to address these concerns effectively. As discussions continue, the Sarawak government's reservations serve as a reminder of the complexities involved in balancing data-driven governance with privacy rights.

The Sarawak government's reservations about PADU highlight the need for a nuanced approach to data collection and privacy protection. Abdul Karim's call for modifications indicates a willingness to engage with the federal government to ensure that data collection initiatives are effective and respectful of citizens' rights.

The debate surrounding PADU also underscores the importance of transparency and public consultation in the development of data-related policies. As technology continues to play a significant role in governance, it is essential for governments to prioritize citizen privacy and data security.

Moving forward, it is crucial for the federal government to address the concerns raised by the Sarawak government and other stakeholders. By working together to find a balanced approach, Malaysia can develop data policies that not only benefit society but also respect individual privacy and rights.
