Rising healthcare costs have been a growing concern for Malaysians, with insurance premiums and medical expenses putting a strain on citizens. Now, a shocking revelation has surfaced—private hospitals are allegedly selling essential medical supplies like face masks and surgical gloves at exorbitant prices, with markups reaching as high as 2000%.

During a debate on the Supplementary Supply Bill in the Dewan Rakyat on March 3, Bayan Baru MP Sim Tze Tzin highlighted the extreme price inflation in private hospitals. He pointed out that while a box of 50 face masks is sold for just RM5 in the market, private hospitals are charging RM2 per piece. This means a full box would cost RM100—an outrageous 2000% increase.

The price hikes don’t stop there. Sim also revealed that surgical gloves, which typically cost RM10 for a box of 100 pieces, are being sold at an astonishing RM20 per pair in private hospitals. Given that Malaysia is the world’s largest producer of rubber gloves, this pricing strategy seems highly unreasonable.

“How does this make sense?” Sim questioned. “Malaysia leads the world in glove production, yet private hospitals are selling them at such exorbitant rates. This is nothing short of excessive profiteering.”

Beyond the issue of overpriced medical supplies, Sim also shed light on the high cost of private healthcare. He cited a case where an elderly patient was charged RM39,000 for knee replacement surgery and a two-day hospital stay. Upon reviewing the bill, he found that the specialist consultation fee—regulated under the Private Healthcare Facilities and Services Act 1998—was RM7,800. However, the remaining RM32,000 consisted of unregulated medical service fees and equipment charges.

“This is absurd,” Sim said. “Patients do not choose to be sick. No one willingly wants to be in and out of hospitals. But when they seek treatment in private facilities, they become victims of excessive medical fees.”

“We’re not trying to punish private hospitals, but there must be a limit. We just want prices to be fair,” he concluded.
