Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Mohd Na’im Mokhtar has cautioned against hasty amendments to the Federal Constitution aimed at safeguarding the State Legislature’s authority to enact Shariah criminal enactments. Emphasizing the need for thorough deliberation, Mohd Na’im stressed the importance of conducting in-depth studies to ensure that any proposed changes are accurate, legally sound, and capable of withstanding potential legal challenges in the future.
Speaking in response to a query raised by PAS’ Marang MP Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang, Mohd Na’im underscored the significance of the ongoing efforts by the Special Committee tasked with studying issues related to the competence of the State Legislature in enacting Islamic law. He expressed confidence that the committee's comprehensive examination would lead to the identification of the most suitable and harmonious solutions to address the concerns regarding the competence of State Legislative Assemblies in enacting Islamic laws and the jurisdiction of Shariah Courts as outlined in the Federal Constitution.
Mohd Na’im highlighted the forthcoming recommendations, views, and suggestions to be presented by the Special Committee, indicating that any proposed amendments to laws or the Federal Constitution would undergo meticulous refinement.
